As an example: Myself I have no problem with hobbing a drive bolt for the extruder, but it does take a few tools and a little testing to get right. Some people does not possess the tools or interest, and would be better off buying a "professionally" hobbed bolt. Giving advice is not always easy. :)
And of course, commercial hot ends are not scams. (At least not the ones that work).
